Handel brings to life a picture of the Golden Age where religion, justice, nature and art are all in harmony, and, as ever, he gives expression to a wide range of human emotions.

Zadok the Priest Much of Handel’s reputation today rests on only a small body of his work, principally Messiah written in 1741, even though the total amount of music he composed was enormous. This preference for Messiah has meant that much of Handel’s work is not heard regularly. Zadok the Priest has had a little […]

This has, in some cases, made for problems of authenticity, but - remarkably - Handel's own manuscript for the Violin Sonata in D major has survived across nearly three centuries, and this music is unquestionably authentic. Music, Spread Thy Voice Around is from Handel’s oratorio Solomon, Act Three, in which the Queen of Sheba visits Solomon’s court and is entertained with a “lulling” musical masque. Israel in Egypt, HWV 54, is a biblical oratorio by the composer George Frideric Handel. Most scholars believe the libretto was prepared by Charles Jennens, who also compiled the biblical texts for Handel's Messiah.

George Frederick HANDEL (1685-1759) Solomon - oratorio in three acts HWV67 (1748) Tim Mead (alto) – Solomon Programme Notes For concert organizers:

A compositional oeuvre which encompasses approximately 700 works of all musical genres. There is hardly another renowned composer whose creative output spans a similarly long period of time and shows a comparable variety. Programme Note Composed in the years following the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Solomon is the oratorio that expresses more than any other of Handel's works the desire for a sense of unity after the deep split that occoured in Great Britain at that time. Handel's Water Music, although it was composed more than thirty years earlier, is often paired with the Music for the Royal Fireworks as both were written for outdoor performance. Together, these works arguably constitute Handel's most famous music for what we would now consider the orchestra. Chorus of Priests: Your harps and cymbals sound 06 By the time Solomon was written, Handel was using no castratos in his oratorios, and the title-role in this case was deliberately designed for a favourite singer of his, the young female mezzo-soprano Caterina Galli (‘the great’, McCreesh; ‘not of the front rank’, Dean); but here the opportunity of securing the pre-eminent countertenor Andreas Scholl proved irresistible.
